For those of us who grew up in Green Bay and had the privilege to participate in athletics, we got to know Dennis because we would see him at so many athletic events. Dennis treated all his relationships the same, with lots of love, consideration, and kindness. It didn’t matter if the other person was a professional athlete or the last person getting into the game for his Little League team. Dennis wanted to be friends with everyone. Earlier in my career I was the basketball coach at Green Bay Premontre High School. As we were nearing the end of practice one evening, I saw Dennis in the gym. First, I wondered how he got into school and secondly, how he got into the gym. I still don’t have the answers to either of those questions. He was very anxious to show me his basketball skills. So, in his own unique way he said, “Lemron, Lemron watch this.” He then proceeded to shoot a half-court hook shot. I don’t remember if the ball hit the rim. What I do remember was the amount of joy he experienced and all the happiness he shared with my players. Everyone left the gym that night with smiles. I had seen Dennis on many occasions through the years and I remember all the happiness he shared with whoever he was with. I’m sorry it took this long to know how blessed I was to have a relationship with him and how fortunate we were, to have his example around athletic contests. We were a better community with him.
